On Tuesday, April 14th, FASTPORT had the honor to meet veterans who are searching for employment at the Heroes 4 Hire Career Fair. Hosted by the Connecticut Department of Labor, this job fair provided education on veteran career opportunities, particularly on those in the trucking industry.
A high demand for careers in trucking from Connecticut and other New England veterans ensured that FASTPORT had a bustling table throughout the event. With hundreds of veterans registered for the fair, our team signed about 12% of the attendees into the Trucking Track Mentoring Program that FASTPORT manages for the Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes Program.
The trucking industry has a unique ability to offer immediate employment for many of these veterans, and career fairs like Heroes 4 Hire highlight that fact. We continually heard comments like, “I wish I knew about this earlier” and “I heard about this from a friend, and I’m glad I came and met you” from job seekers throughout the day. These comments show how important it is to uncover profitable careers in the industry. While the Heroes 4 Hire was a success, we can do more to help veterans access these in-demand positions across the country. Having the DOL promote the Trucking Track Mentoring Program will put us on the road to making that happen.
