The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) approved two new National Standards of Apprenticeship for employers in the Transportation & Logistics Sector: diesel mechanics and transportation management coordinators. Transportation management coordinators includes fleet managers, driver managers, and dispatch managers in all possible nomenclatures. Additionally, diesel mechanic is a generic title that can train all iterations of diesel and maintence technicians. These new apprenticeships are an incredible step toward employing and training the next generation of transportation professionals.

FASTPORT, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes and Kenworth Trucking today announced that U.S. Navy veteran Troy Davidson, a driver for Werner Enterprises, is the winner of the 2016 “Transition Trucking: Driving For Excellence” award. Davidson received the keys to a brand new, fully-loaded T680 truck donated by Kenworth, which holds a stamped aluminum cab and integral sleeper. The overall suggested retail price of a new Kenworth T680 is approximately $152,000. Article

Just a few miles from Pearl Harbor, hundreds of service members gathered to learn what the civilian job market holds for them after they transition from service. In standing-room only presentation halls, FASTPORT presented on they have to look forward to in the transportation & logistics industry: high-skilled and high-paying careers in an ever-growing field. In addition to providing educational workshops, FASTPORT spoke on an employer-based panel that sought to give military officers insight on how to best prepare their command units to transition. The day before the panel, we were honored to help Soldiers test the Hiring Our Heroes Resume Engine software to ensure that future service members have the best tool possible to create their civilian resume.

The Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence award program hit another milestone at the Great American Trucking Show (GATS) with its announcement of the top 3 finalists in the running to win a fully-loaded Kenworth T680 with a PACCAR engine. Coordinated by FASTPORT, Kenworth, and Hiring Our Heroes, the finalists first explored the George W. Bush Presidential Library where Colonel Miguel Howe of the George W. Bush Institute met and spoke with our Veterans to give them even more insight into the library and museum. Article

With two workshops, two panels, and one hiring fair under FASTPORT's belt, we were able to directly meet with hundreds of transitioning service members and Veterans in the local community to address one of their top priorities: where to find their best-matched career. The Alaska Transition Summit attracted many service members who understood the value the transportation industry holds for them—and the value their military background has for the industry. Due to this understanding, our focus during the transition summit was to educate Soldiers on the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Military Skills Waiver. Many of service members had the professional driving career goals, and the CDL Skills Waiver is an excellent way to translate their military driving experience directly into civilian licensing to jumpstart their careers.

Held on an active Reserve base, the hiring event in Houston was small but packed with a great amount of talented job seekers. Unique to Reserve centers is the need to stay close to the area but the immediate availability of the job seeker. A majority of the companies FASTPORT assists in reaching, inspiring, and hiring military Veterans are supporters of Guard and Reserve and able to employ with the schedule flexibility required of these service members. Over 30 job seekers left the event having been connected with companies partnering with FASTPORT.

On Friday, July 15th, the Veteran Employment Advisory Council convened to discuss ways to improve the Veteran employment landscape. One of the ways that people locked onto to accomplish this goal was the Resume Engine that FASTPORT and Hiring Our Heroes presented to the council, which showcased a new way to help the military community create great resumes and seek out careers online. Later that day, Comerica Park saw hundreds of military Veterans and spouses finding employment opportunities in the Great Lakes State. Sharri Justice and FASTPORT CEO, Bill McLennan spoke with the troops about both driving and non-driving possibilities and connected over 50 job seekers with opportunities in the transportation industry.

Due to the success of the transportation industry-specific hiring fairs across numerous military bases, Camp Lejeune leadership requested FASTPORT host an educational and hiring event for transitioning Marines. Over 200 Marines attended the event to network with employers and learn from the informational panel discussion. The King of NASCAR Richard Petty spoke to the gathered attendees to thank them for their service, show them the career opportunities in transportation, and meet and greet with Marines during the event.

Over 1,500 service members, from junior enlisted to officers, attended the first transition summit at Scott Air Force Base, the United States Transportation Command. This command is the single manager of the United States' global defense transportation system and is tasked with the coordination of people and transportation assets to sustain forces, whenever, wherever, and for as long as they are needed. Dr. Susan Kelly, Director of Transition to Veterans Programs for the Department of Defense, gave words of encouragement and announced her retirement September 1, 2016.

To demonstrate the trucking industry's pride in supporting the military community with careers after they transition from service, FASTPORT teamed up with Forts Sill, Riley and Leonard Wood to bring the best and brightest to SuperRigs in Joplin, MO. SuperRigs is an annual trucking industry event that combines educational presentations, engine teardown demonstrations, and dozens of trucks on display. Military Veterans who entered the trucking industry after their military service spoke on a panel specifically targeted to these visiting Soldiers so they could learn from industry-insiders who have been in their place.
